Chapter 4 – The Wife Who Knew Too Much

Victoria woke to find her face on every entertainment site in the city. The photograph chosen by the largest outlet showed her hand twisted in Sofia’s hair, her scarlet dress bright against the white tablecloth.
The headline called her a jealous socialite. The comments called her things far worse.
For the first time in years, she could not make a scandal disappear with a phone call.
Her publicist proposed a statement claiming Sofia had threatened her. Victoria approved the draft without reading its final paragraph.
By noon, the statement had been released, and an edited clip circulated alongside it. The edited version began with Sofia pushing Victoria, omitting the hair grab entirely.
It took Sofia less than an hour to recognize that someone was trying to rewrite the sequence everyone had witnessed.
Denise recognized it too. She had worked long enough in hotels to know the difference between a mistake and a cover-up.
The complete recordings existed in the hotel’s legal archive, and she had documented their transfer before the deletion request arrived.
She gave Ruth Park a certified copy and an audit trail showing that an executive account had attempted to erase the files at 9:42 on gala night.
The account belonged to a security consultant hired by Victoria’s office. Victoria denied authorizing deletion.
Denise said the question could be settled through records rather than accusations.
Sofia watched the exchange from the attorney’s office, angry at how much time and money were being spent proving something that had happened in front of a roomful of witnesses.
Alex had a different question. He asked Victoria when she first learned Elena might have had a child.
They met in the conservatory of the Moretti house, where winter sunlight fell across expensive plants maintained by staff. Victoria said she had heard rumors only recently.
Alex placed an email on the table. It was dated eleven months earlier, sent from a private investigator to her assistant, and referred to a twenty-one-year-old woman named Sofia Rivera.
Victoria tried to explain that the investigator had been hired to screen possible threats. Alex asked why she had not told him.
She said she feared an impostor would destroy their marriage. Alex replied that a possible daughter was not a threat to their marriage unless someone chose to treat her as one.
He asked again, more quietly. Victoria finally admitted that Marco had warned her a young woman might claim to be Elena’s child.
Marco had supplied a dossier alleging Sofia was unstable and seeking money. Victoria had believed it because believing it was easier than imagining Alex had another family.
She had ordered her staff to keep Sofia away from events, residences, and offices associated with the Morettis.
Alex asked whether Victoria had ever met Elena. Victoria said no.
She had seen photographs, read the dossier, and heard stories from Marco, but she had entered Alex’s life years after Elena disappeared. She insisted she had not arranged the original separation.
Alex believed that part. He also knew it did not absolve her of what she had done to Sofia.
Sofia learned of the admission that evening. She sat in Denise’s kitchen with the complete video paused on a laptop.
She had watched herself being dragged by the hair enough times to know that the humiliation would not fade quickly. The edited clip had already cost her two temporary jobs.
One employer said he did not want controversy at his restaurant. Another simply stopped returning calls.
Alex offered to intervene. Sofia refused.
She wanted the employers to see the truth, not a billionaire’s threat. Ruth helped her draft a factual statement, attaching the unedited footage and the police report.
It did not insult Victoria or ask strangers to take sides. It described the assault, the attempt to alter the recording, and Sofia’s intention to continue searching for Elena.
The statement spread further than the original scandal. Viewers noticed how Sofia had tried to walk away before Victoria grabbed her.
Former hotel employees shared stories about Denise’s integrity. A legal clinic offered Sofia part-time administrative work, saying her careful documentation showed the kind of judgment they valued.
Sofia accepted after confirming the offer came with real responsibilities, not charity.
Victoria’s friends began disappearing. A woman who had attended her charity luncheons for a decade declined an invitation without explanation.
Two board members asked her to step aside temporarily. Victoria had spent years cultivating admiration and discovered that admiration could evaporate faster than affection.
She told herself she was being punished for one moment of anger, but the email on Alex’s table told a larger story.
Marco called that night. He warned that Alex was asking questions about old transactions and suggested Victoria remind her husband how much their marriage had survived.
Victoria asked whether Elena was alive. Marco did not answer immediately.
Then he said some questions were safer left unasked. The pause chilled her more than any threat.
Victoria began reviewing the investigator’s dossier. Most pages contained mundane details about Sofia’s jobs, education, and apartment.
One page included a photograph of Elena taken six months earlier outside a legal office. The date was three days before her disappearance.
Victoria had never looked closely at it. Now she noticed a black sedan reflected in the building’s glass doors.
The license plate was partially visible.
She enlarged the image and recognized the sedan as one of Marco’s fleet vehicles. She had ridden in it herself.
The discovery forced her to consider that Marco’s story about a manipulative daughter was not merely wrong but deliberately constructed.
Alex, meanwhile, attended a small press conference outside the legal clinic where Sofia had begun working. He had asked her permission first.
He said the laboratory had confirmed Sofia was his daughter and that she had been subjected to unacceptable treatment at the gala. He refused to discuss Elena’s disappearance publicly while an investigation was underway.
When a reporter asked whether he blamed Sofia for the scandal, Alex answered that the scandal was the way his daughter had been treated.
Sofia stood beside him, not behind him. She said she wanted her mother found and wanted the evidence preserved.
Her voice shook once, but she did not step away from the microphone. Denise watched from the back of the small crowd and felt an unexpected pride.
The young woman who had arrived at her service entrance in the rain was learning to make herself heard without surrendering her dignity.
That afternoon Victoria went to Alex’s office carrying the photograph of Elena and the reflected sedan. She expected him to shout.
Instead he listened, asked where the image came from, and requested the original file. Victoria admitted that she had known about Sofia for months and had allowed Marco to dictate her response.
She said she had been afraid of losing Alex. He replied that fear explained her choices but did not excuse them.
Victoria asked whether their marriage was over. Alex said he could not answer while Elena remained missing and Sofia was still being threatened.
He asked Victoria to cooperate fully with Ruth and the authorities. She agreed, though her hands shook as she handed over her phone.
Denise’s technician recovered a second audit log that evening. The deletion request had not originated solely from Victoria’s consultant.
A mirrored instruction had come from a remote administrator account linked to Bellini Strategic Holdings. Someone had planned to erase the recording regardless of whether Victoria approved it.
Sofia looked at the two audit trails side by side. Victoria had tried to hide an assault.
Marco had tried to erase evidence that Sofia had entered Alex’s life at all. The difference mattered.
It meant the scandal was not simply about a jealous wife. Someone was frightened of what a daughter might uncover.
The hotel employees held a private meeting after Denise shared the audit trail with counsel. Several were frightened that cooperating would cost them shifts or promotions.
Denise told them that the law and hotel policy protected truthful reporting, but she did not promise there would be no discomfort.
She arranged confidential interviews and ensured each employee could review a written statement before signing it.
One server remembered seeing Victoria’s assistant speak to the security consultant just before Sofia was confronted. Another recalled that the consultant asked which camera covered the VIP table.
The details suggested advance attention to Sofia, though neither witness knew why. Denise collected their accounts separately so that one person’s memory would not influence another’s.
Sofia later thanked the staff in a short message. She did not ask anyone to risk their job for her.
She said their willingness to describe what they actually saw had made it harder for powerful people to invent a different evening. Several employees replied that they had been ashamed of freezing during the assault.
Sofia told them that truth afterward still mattered, especially when fear had made action difficult in the moment.
At the Moretti house, Victoria sat alone in the conservatory and opened an old message from Marco. It contained one instruction: If the girl reaches Alessandro, tell him she is lying.
She deleted nothing. Instead she forwarded the message to Ruth, knowing it might be the first honest thing she had done since Sofia appeared.
