THE BRIDE WAS HIS ALIBI
He married her to bury the truth.

My mother-in-law slapped me in front of two hundred guests because I put my mother's photograph on a wall.

The glass broke. The music stopped. And my husband asked me to take the conversation somewhere private.

That was the night I stopped mistaking silence for love.

For three years, I believed Julian Mercer had chosen me despite the accusation that followed my mother everywhere. His family owned a grand hotel, hosted charity dinners, and knew how to make forgiveness look generous. My mother had once worked for them. When money disappeared from an employee fund, they made sure everyone remembered her name.

She died before that name was cleared.

I thought restoring her photograph to the hotel's history was the least I could do. Celeste Mercer thought it was an act of defiance.

“Your mother stole enough from this family,” she told me.

So I asked her to show me the record.

Instead, my sister-in-law showed me something I had watched a hundred times without knowing what it meant: my wedding video.

There we were on the screen, Julian and I dancing beneath the chandeliers. The perfect couple. The perfect memory. A beautiful piece of footage that had helped place my husband somewhere he had not been.

Because at the moment that dance was supposed to be happening, I was standing alone in a corridor, waiting for him.

And the original camera had kept recording.

Behind a service door, an accountant had questioned a page she was never supposed to question. Elsewhere in the records, my signature appeared beneath a statement I had never witnessed. The date beside it was the day I married Julian.

Now every reassurance he had given me sounded different. Every time he had guided me away from a difficult conversation felt less like protection. And every question about my mother's past led back to the man who had promised me a future.

Julian wanted me to remember the good parts of our marriage. His mother wanted me to think about what exposing the truth could cost the family.

Neither wanted me to ask what their silence had already cost mine.

I restore damaged records for a living. I know the difference between preserving something and making it look untouched. This time, the damage ran through my mother's reputation, my wedding vows, and the life I thought I had chosen.

Before I could decide what was worth saving, I needed one answer.

Had Julian married me because he loved me—or because he needed a bride nobody would question?

An original fictional family mystery told in ten complete chapters.
