The property hearing took place in a downtown courthouse. Brooks presented the original deed, the residence agreement, and the trust documents. The bank confirmed that it had relied on representations from Alexander’s company, but it agreed to release any claim against the mansion once alternative security was arranged.

The judge asked Alexander whether he disputed that Richard was the legal owner. Alexander answered no. He acknowledged that his father had allowed him to live there under a separate agreement and admitted that he had shoved Richard during the celebration.

The court confirmed Richard’s ownership. Alexander received a limited period to remove his belongings and business equipment. Any verified renovation expenses would be reviewed separately. The trust was placed under independent administration, and the scholarship fund would be restored with recovered assets.

Outside the courthouse, Alexander asked Richard for another chance. Richard said he could return to his life, but not because a document required it. He would have to earn trust through his actions.

Vanessa left with her attorney. Her cooperation did not erase the investigation, and she would still face the consequences of the forged authorization and diverted money.

Richard placed the brass key in his pocket. It had survived the party and the legal battle. He told Alexander that a key was not a trophy. It was a responsibility: whoever entered the house had to respect the people inside.

Alexander nodded. For once, he did not argue.
