Chapter 9 – Chapter 9 – Richard’s Testimony and the Apology His Son Owed

Richard gave a formal statement about the trust, the deed, and the night of the party. He explained that he had allowed Alexander to live in the mansion but had never transferred ownership. He also identified the disputed signature as false.
When asked about the shove, Richard said he had gone to the celebration carrying a photograph for his son. He had hoped Alexander would remember his mother. Instead, he had been pushed to the floor in front of guests.
Alexander listened from across the room. After the interview, he followed Richard outside and apologized. Richard told him that the worst part was not the fall; it was seeing his son care more about the guests’ opinions than his father’s dignity.
Alexander issued a public statement accepting responsibility. He did not blame stress, alcohol, or confusion. He confirmed that Richard owned the mansion and admitted that his behavior had been cruel.
The statement did not stop the headlines, but it changed the conversation. Some business partners respected his honesty. Others began distancing themselves.
Richard gave Alexander the list of former scholarship recipients. “Call them,” he said. “Listen before you offer anything.”
Alexander began with a nurse whose education had nearly ended when the scholarship payments stopped. She remembered Richard bringing books to her family. She did not remember Alexander.
That call hurt more than the falling share price. He realized how many people had been affected while he enjoyed the benefits of a fund he had never bothered to inspect.
