Chapter 5 – Chapter 5 – The Workshop Where Richard Built His Family’s Future

Richard returned to the small workshop behind the first house he and Eleanor had owned. The room smelled of cedar and machine oil. Tools hung above a scarred workbench, and a photograph of Eleanor stood beside a jar of old screws. It was here that Richard had repaired furniture after construction shifts and saved money for the mansion.

Brooks visited with the original trust papers. Eleanor’s letters described their plan: the mansion would remain a family home, and the trust would support scholarships for children of construction workers. Their son was meant to inherit responsibility, not simply wealth.

Richard admitted that the scholarship payments had stopped years earlier. He had been told the fund was being restructured. He had never been shown the accounts.

Alexander arrived unexpectedly. He looked around the workshop with embarrassment. “Why didn’t you tell me about the letters?”

“You knew this place existed,” Richard said. “You stopped asking about it.”

Alexander saw the photograph of his mother. He remembered her painting the mansion’s front door and telling him that a home was measured by how people felt inside it.

“I’m sorry about the party,” he said.

Richard did not accept the apology immediately. “You chose to humiliate me because you thought I had no power.”

“I lost control.”

“No. You used your strength against an old man who trusted you.”

Alexander lowered his eyes. Richard handed him a list of former scholarship recipients. “If you want to help, find out what happened to the money. Start with the people who were promised it.”

For the first time, Alexander had a task that could not be solved by buying something or giving an order.
