The ledger photograph showed money moving from the Hale Family Trust into a consulting company. The transfers had occurred while Vanessa was working in the family business’s finance department. Alexander asked her about it. She claimed the money had been used for emergency company expenses and later repaid.

But the records did not show repayment.

Brooks arranged an independent audit. The accountant discovered repeated withdrawals authorized under a temporary power of attorney. The signature looked like Richard’s, but Richard denied ever signing the documents.

Alexander confronted Vanessa again. “You told me the trust was empty.”

“I told you there was no money available,” she replied. “Your father was refusing to help the company.”

“That does not explain why funds went to a company connected to you.”

Vanessa said the transfers were temporary. She argued that she had saved Alexander’s business during a difficult period. Alexander wanted to believe her, but she could not produce receipts or account statements.

Richard met Brooks at a quiet café. He admitted he had suspected irregularities but had avoided an investigation because he feared exposing his son to scandal. “I thought if I protected the house and stayed quiet, Alexander would eventually remember what mattered,” he said.

Brooks showed him the disputed signature. Richard immediately recognized that it was not his.

Across the street, a dark car watched them. When Richard left, it followed him for several blocks before disappearing.

The next morning Alexander received another anonymous photograph. It showed Vanessa meeting Daniel Price, the former family accountant who had vanished years earlier. The message beneath it read: *Ask her why Price had to disappear.*
