Ray Mason answered on the second ring.

“Maya? I was trying to reach you. Is Eli coming for the weekend or not?”

Nate sat beside her while she spoke. Elena had taken Eli to get a sandwich, with Maya’s permission, and would bring him straight back.

“Dad, what did Ruth tell you?”

“That you needed help while the house was being repaired. That Eli wanted to stay a few days. I told her I’d be happy to have him if you called and agreed.”

“I didn’t agree.”

Ray was quiet.

“Then he isn’t coming. That’s why I called you last night. I wasn’t going to turn up and collect him on someone else’s word.”

Maya looked at the message she had missed while her phone charged in the bedroom. Her father’s words had been ordinary: Call me about Eli when you can.

Nothing about two weeks. Nothing about moving boxes, school shoes, or a second delivery address.

“She put your house on the moving job,” Maya said. “His whole room was marked to go there.”

“His room?”

“Yes.”

Ray drew a slow breath.

“I said a weekend. And I said I needed to hear from you.”

After the call, Nate contacted the moving company. He asked for the version of the job he had approved and the later changes. The dispatcher could send the booking information to the customer email already on the account.

He asked the dispatcher to check both the pickup time and the destinations against the original estimate.

The reply showed that Ruth had called the previous afternoon, paid for an additional stop, and brought the pickup forward to Saturday. She had described the change as a family arrangement.

Blue labels went to Cedar Ridge Road. White labels went to Briar Lane.

Nate remembered the rolls of tape Ruth had carried into the house the night before. She had said colors would help the movers keep track.

Maya stared at the screen.

“She packed his school shoes.”

“I know.”

“He doesn’t need school shoes for a weekend with Grandpa.”

Outside the room, a cart rattled down the corridor. Nate put his phone facedown.

“I should have checked what she was arranging.”

“You should have told her she wasn’t arranging our son.”

He looked at Maya and nodded. He did not explain how busy he had been or how much money his mother was saving them.

Later that afternoon, Maya was cleared to leave with follow-up instructions. She chose to spend the night at Elena’s house. Nate called his mother to say they would not be arriving with the truck.

Ruth sent photographs instead of answering his first question.

The guest bedroom had fresh sheets. A crib stood in Nate’s old bedroom beneath a little mobile. There were drawers waiting for baby clothes and a new rocking chair by the window.

Maya scrolled through every picture.

Then she handed the phone back.

“Ask her to show you where Eli was going to sleep.”
